AFSPA in Nagaland extended for six months

Govt launches e-bidding portal for domestic coal-based IPPs

The Ministry of Power launched a portal for optimum utilization of domestic coal by independent power producer (IPP). An official statement said this web portal would save the consumer close to Rs. 20,000 crore five years down the line.

Acc. to Union Minister Piyush Goyal, with the help of this portal, Producers can reduce power costs by 10 paise per unit by rationalizing coal supply made possible through the e-bid portal.

The indigenously developed Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air (QRSAM) Missile successfully test fired 

The missile has a strike range of 25 km to 30 km. Designed to be a quick reaction missile, it involves an all- weather weapon system capable of tracking and firing. The missile was test-fired from a truck-mounted canister launcher from launch complex-3 at the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur, Odisha.

 

Indo-Thailand joint military exercise begins in Himachal Pradesh

The joint exercise of the Indian Army with the Royal Thailand Army commenced at Bakloh in Chamba district
The aim of this exercise is to build and promote closer relations while exchanging skills and experiences between the two armies. ‘Exercise Maitree 2017’ is a continuation of a series of joint exercises between the Indian Army and the Royal Thailand Army.

  • A joint training exercise between the Indian Army and the Royal Army of Oman named Al Nagah-II 2017 also held in Himachal Pradesh in March 2017.

 Trilateral Malabar exercise to kick off on July 10

The Malabar naval exercise involving Indian, American and Japanese navies will kick start on July 10 in the Bay of Bengal
The aim of the Malabar exercise is to achieve deeper military ties and greater interoperability among the three navies in the strategically-important Indo-Pacific region. India and the US have regularly conducted the annual exercise since 1992.

India scores well on FSB reform report card to G20

The Financial StabilityBoard (FSB), an international body for the global financial system, has placed India in the league of countries that are ‘compliant or largely compliant’ on the implementation of priority area reforms. Ahead of the G20 Summit in Germany to be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, among other world leaders, the FSB has submitted its status report on progress in financial regulatory reforms in various jurisdictions, including India.
The report listed India as a ‘compliant’ jurisdiction with regard to Basel  reforms in risk-based capital and as ’largely compliant’ on liquidity coverage ratio. Other countries that have been found to be ‘compliant or largely compliant’ on these metrics include Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, South Korea, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, Switzerland, Turkey and the US. At the same time, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and the UK have been found to be ’materially non-compliant’ on at least one parameter.

TERI ranked second among world’s climate think tanks

An international body which focuses on climate policies has ranked The Energy Resources Institute (TERI) among the top think tanks in the world. TERI was ranked number two by the International Center for Climate Governance (ICCG).

The New Delhi-based think tank was ranked under the category ‘2016 Top Climate Think Tanks in the Rest of the World–Absolute Global Rankings’during ICCG’s 23rd annual conference of the European Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (EAERE) in Athens in Greece.

ICICI Bank terminates joint venture agreement with Fairfax

, Fairfax Financial Holdings had increased its stake in the Indian insurance firm to 35 percent by picking up an additional 9 per cent stake in ICICI Lombard for about Rs. 1,600 crore. The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has already given its initial approval to Fairfax’s new insurance venture

The United Forum of Bank Unions has decided to observe July 19, the 48th anniversary of nationalization of major banks, as ‘Save public sector banks’ day.

Tata Global Beverages Ltd. appointed Natarajan Chandrasekaran as the Chairman of its board with immediate effect. Chandrasekaran will succeed Harish Bhat.

5th Meeting of BRICS Education Ministers held in China

Meeting of BRICS Ministers of Education was held in Beijing, China. The Indian delegation was led by Shri Prakash Javadekar, Minister of Human Resource Development, India.

AIIB approves USD 329 mn loan to build roads in Gujarat

China-based Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) announced its approval to a $329 million loan to build access roads across 4,000 villages in Gujarat.
The funds have been approved to construct road linkages for last-mile connectivity to schools and tribal areas in 33 districts of the state.
